Recycling Program | Recycling Frequently Asked Questions

Recycling Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Listed below are frequently asked questions which will hopefully help answer resident's questions regarding the City's Recycling Program.  If you have a question and are not finding the answer below, please call our Utilities Office at (937) 848-4638 and we will be happy to assist you.

Q.         What are the benefits of using a 65 gallon recycling tote rather than an 18 gallon recycling bin?

A.         The capacity of the 65 gallon recycling tote is more than 3 times larger than the 18 gallon bin.  The 65 gallon tote has a lid which will reduce the amount of debris and litter in the City.  The 65 gallon tote has wheels to make it easier to roll to the end of your driveway.

Q.         Why is the pick-up for recycling only every two weeks?

A.         With the increased capacity for recyclables, the City believes that bi-weekly pick-up is more economical.  It will cut the amount of recycling truck trips in half, saving wear and tear to the streets and cutting vehicle emissions.

Q.         How do I know when it is “recycling” week?

A.         Every customer has received a schedule for 2011 in the mail listing the pick-up dates for recycling.  Notifications will continue to be posted on BellbrookTV and this website.

Q.         Will my weekly trash collection be affected?

A.         No.  Trash collection will continue to occur every Friday.

Q.         Can I keep my existing 18 gallon recycling bin?

A.         Yes, customers may choose to keep their existing bin.  However, recycling pick-up for all customers will be bi-weekly.

Q.         What items can be recycled?

A.        -Plastics – Milk containers, soft drink, shampoo, laundry and detergent bottles with the recycling logos 1 through 7.  Foam and rigid polystyrene food packaging containers with the recycling logo 6.  Remove caps or lids and rinse out.  Plastic may be crushed to conserve space in your container.

-Glass – Clear, brown, green and blue glass food and beverage containers and jars.  Remove caps or lids and rinse out.  Paper labels and metal lids do not need to be removed.

-Metal – Aluminum cans, steel soup and food cans and empty aerosol cans.  Rinse out and drain.  Steel lids and labels do not need to be removed.

-Paper – Newspapers with ad inserts, magazines, retail catalogs, telephone books, paperboard boxes, junk mail, soft drink and beer cartons and cardboard boxes (broken down in to 3 ft x 3 ft sections).  It is preferred that residents place shredded paper in clear plastic bags.

-Food Cartons – Paperboard food cartons containing items such as milk, juice and fabric softeners.  Cartons include boxes which use straws.

Q.         What items can not be recycled?

A.        -Plastics – Wide-mouth containers such as margarine bowls, plastic flatware, CD cases, toys, oil jugs, plastic bags (including grocery bags), plastic buckets and garden hoses.  Non-food packaging, including Styrofoam packing peanuts.

-Glass – Window glass, mirrors, light bulbs, drinking glasses, mugs and cooking glassware.

-Metal – Pots, pans, scrap metal or steel, coat hangers and paint cans.  Paint cans are able to be disposed by drying the paint inside and calling the waste company for a bulk pick-up.

-Paper – Pizza boxes, grease and food contamination make the boxes unacceptable because of glue and food contamination.

-Food Cartons – Frozen food cartons, frozen juice concentrate containers, straws and wax-coated products.
